Massage therapy is manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person’s health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities).
Some of the more familiar methods include Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger point, and on site chair massage. There are many more, such as Thai, Shiatsu, Rolfing, Cranial-Sacral, Quantum Touch, Reiki, and other energy types of massage.
I will try to explain what happens in each so you can make an intelligent choice about what types are for you, and what the benefits would be for you with each modality. Your knowledge of massage types will help you be able to choose the one that is right for you.
From the time I started massage school, I started realizing how very important it is to give your body the tools it needs to heal itself. When the right tools are included in your health care, you will be better equipped to help your healing process. The body has an amazing capacity to make things right when you have the nutrition, the right exercise, the right bodywork, and the right medical team.
Doctors aren’t perfect, but they do the best they know from their training. It is up to us to look for what is missing from our health care. That can include massage, nutrition, exercise, the right amount of sleep, alternative healers and supplements. Relaxation and stress relief can be so important to top off the package.
Your choice of bodywork (massage) can make the difference in your relaxation and stress relief. If you are stressed from happenings at home or work, a simple Swedish massage can be very helpful, but if you are stressed from muscular pain, then more specific techniques may need to be incorporated.
